2024 – 2025 Academic Excellence Awardee

As you may know, each year we invite DMD members to apply and share their strategies for achieving a GPA higher than 3.8 (undergraduate) or 3.95 (graduate). The application also includes an essay on their approach to achieving academic excellence, along with references from professors.

This year, the award goes to DMD member Sirena Hepburn. Sirena is currently pursuing a BA in Healthcare Technical Management (Health Information Management). In addition to recognition on our website and through our chapter email, she also receives a $250 cash award. Below is her photo and the essay that qualified her for this honor. We encourage you to read her strategies for achieving strong academic success.

"Keeping a high GPA hasn’t always been easy, especially with a full schedule that includes work, ministry, school, and other responsibilities. What has helped me most is staying consistent with my study habits and being intentional about managing my time. I try not to wait until the last minute to study or complete assignments; instead, I review materials regularly and set aside time each week to stay caught up. I also take advantage of the resources available to me, such as discussion boards and office hours, which help me better understand the material and stay connected with my classes.

With everything I have going on, self-management has been key. At the beginning of each week, I check all my assignments and deadlines, then map out when I will complete each task. I usually set personal deadlines earlier than the actual due dates, just in case something unexpected comes up. That buffer has really helped me avoid stress and stay on track. Even when I feel overwhelmed, I make it a priority to stay engaged and give my best in every course. It takes a lot of discipline, but it has been worth it to stay organized and committed to doing well".
